Juventus – Napoli highlights weekend

Another exciting slate of games lies ahead of us over the weekend. Juventus looks to keep their spot at the top of the Serie A standings with a win over Napoli, while Spartak and CSKA battles in a Moscow derby in Russia.

In England, Tottenham takes on reigning champions Leicester, while Chelsea travels to St. Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton. Here are some of the games to keep an extra eye on this weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur – Leicester City (Premier League Matchday 10):

Tottenham are looking to get back in the win column after two straight draws, as they take on reigning champions Leicester City on Saturday at White Hart Lane.

Spurs have been struggling without top goalscorer Harry Kane, and with the England international still out, it will most likely be Heung-Min Son or Vincent Janssen leading the line against the Foxes. Tottenham are coming off draws against West Bromwich Albion and Bournemouth in the league. The team suffered a 2-1 loss to Liverpool midweek in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Leicester picked up a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Matchday 9 after goals by Ahmed Musa, Shinji Okazaki and Christian Fuchs. For Musa and Fuchs it was their first goals for the club, and it was surely a nice one for Musa who was brought in to alleviate some of the pressure on Jamie Vardy. Along with the win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League, the Foxes seems to have found a bit of form.

Spartak Moscow – CSKA Moscow (Russian Premier League Matchday 12):

Spartak will play host to reigning champions CSKA in a big Moscow derby on Saturday. Spartak sits at the top of the standings on 25 points, level with Zenit St. Petersburg. CSKA sits in third place, four points behind the top duo, and a win would get them a step closer to regaining top position in the league.

CSKA is coming off a loss, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Lokomotiv in the derby last weekend after a goal by Maicon. Spartak took a 1-0 win over Ural Yekaterinburg last week thanks to a goal by Lorenzo Melgarejo. The home side has won three out of their five last league games, while CSKA has two win and a draw in their five last league outings.

Juventus – Napoli (Serie A Matchday 11):

League leaders Juventus takes on third-placed Napoli at Juventus Stadium on Saturday in a big Serie A matchup. Juven sits at the top of the standings with 24 points in 10 matches, two points ahead of Roma and four points ahead of Napoli. Juventus is coming off a 4-1 win over Sampdoria midweek, but suffered a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan last weekend. Gonzalo Higuain left Napoli for Juve over the summer, and the Argentine international leads the team in scoring with six league goals in 10 appearances.

For Napoli, it’s been Jose Callejon leading the way as Arek Milik went down injured while on international duty with Poland. Callejon leads Napoli in scoring with six goals in 10 league outings. Napoli is coming off a 2-0 win over Empoli midweek, with Dries Mertens and Vlad Chiriches finding the back of the net. Last season in this fixture, Juventus took a 1-0 win after a late goal by Simone Zaza.

OGC Nice – Nantes (Ligue 1 Matchday 11):

Nice is at the top of the Ligue 1 standings heading into the weekend, and the team has been on a remarkable run. With eight wins and two draws so far this season, Nice is the lone team left in Ligue 1 that is undefeated. They top the table on 26 points, four ahead of second-placed Monaco and six points ahead of reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. The team is coming off 4-2 win on the road against Metz, with Alassane Plea scoring a hat-trick. Mario Balotelli has adapted well to his new surroundings, and has five goals in four matches.

Nantes sits down in in 14th place with 11 points after 10 matches. The team is on a decent run with two wins and a draw in their last five league outings. They are coming off a 2-1 win over Angers in the Round of 32 in the Coupe de la Ligue midweek. Goalscoring has been the big issue for Nantes, as they only have seven goals in the opening 10 games.

Southampton – Chelsea (Premier League Matchday 10):

Chelsea and manager Antonio Conte is hoping to keep their good streak going when they travel to St. Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton on Sunday.

The Blues have three straight wins and have kept three clean sheets in the process. After wins over Hull and Leicester, they picked up an impressive 4-0 win over Manchester United last week in Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge. The switch to a 3-4-3 formation looks like a stroke of genius by Conte as Chelsea looks a lot more stable at the back while still being dangerous going forward. Chelsea is coming off a 2-1 loss to West Ham United in the EFL Cup midweek.

Southampton held league leaders Manchester City to a 1-1 draw last week, and things are starting to look promising under new manager Claude Puel who took over from Ronald Koeman after his departure to Everton. The Saints picked up a 1-0 win over Sunderland in the EFL Cup midweek after a goal by Sofiane Boufal. Puel gave several youngsters a chance against Sunderland, and it doesn’t look like the talent pool at the club is drying up anytime soon.
