Two substitutes ended up playing a pivotal role in Newcastle’s turnaround against Tottenham on Sunday as the Magpies took a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane.
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez both came off the bench for Newcastle and ended up on the scoresheet. Eric Dier had given Tottenham the lead in the 39th minute. Newcastle came back in the second half to win the game. Mitrovic tied the game up in the 74th minute, just two minutes after coming on for Papiss Demba Cisse. Perez had come on in the 63rd minute, and in added time he scored the game winner for Newcastle with a great display of composure as he took the ball down with his chest and hit a volley in behind Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham net.
Manager Steve McClaren was pleased with the win and the performance.
“It was a big test, especially at halftime being 1-0 down,” McClaren told BBC Sport after the win. “I don’t think we’ve had back-to-back wins for over a year or coming back from 1-0 or 2-0 down for over a year so that was pleasing and answered some of the critics.”
Newcastle has two wins in a row after beating Liverpool the previous week. The three points against Tottenham took Newcastle out of the relegation zone and up to 15th place in the Premier League standings. The Magpies have 16 points in 16 games and will take on bottom of the table Aston Villa at home next Saturday.
“Back-to-back [wins] were important, consistency is important,” McClaren said. “They know how to win, we just need to do it consistently.”
