Arsenal had the opportunity to go top of the Premier League table, but the Gunners suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday.
As leaders Leicester City lost to Liverpool, Arsenal could go top with a win over Southampton, but they left St. Mary’s Stadium with a 4-0 loss. Cuco Martina scored the opening goal in the 19th minute, and it would remain the score until the second half. Shane Long made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. Jose Fonte then made it 3-0 in the 69th minute. Long then added a second goal in added time.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger didn’t try to explain away the defeat during his postgame press conference, as the Frenchman gave credit to Southampton.
“I must say they were sharper than us in the challenges and on that front we have to look at what we can master,” Wenger told arsenal.com. “We cannot master the decision of the referee but we can master our own behaviour and I believe Southampton looked stronger in the challenges and we lost too many tonight.”
Wenger also addressed the fact that his side missed out on the opportunity to go top of the table.
“I said before the game at the moment if we are one point ahead or one point behind it is not too important,” Wenger said. “It is the performance that counts. We were not good enough to win the game and we have to look at that. On the other hand we can’t look too much at that as in 48 hours we play again. We were disappointed and frustrated and the only way is to respond in 48 hours.”
Arsenal takes on Bournemouth on Monday.
