Arsenal took a dominant 6-0 win at the Emirates Stadium over visiting Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Mesut Ozil scored a hat-trick, with Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also finding the back of the net for the Gunners. The game was the team’s highest scoring match since the 5-2 win over Leicester City last season in the league. Manager Arsene Wenger was happy with the win, but thought they eased up a bit after the opening goal. Arsenal held a 2-0 lead at halftime before taking the game to Ludogorets in the second half.
“We scored early and maybe we eased off a bit too early,” Wenger said. “It’s funny because the more goals we scored, the better we defended. In the first half it’s true that we were sometimes in danger with runs coming from deep. The strikers came into midfield, flooded the midfield and got them out of pressure. Then we were in trouble twice. We’d like to give credit to Ospina who saved us twice with very important saves.
Wenger attributed the scoring explosion to the confidence in the squad. The Gunners have racked up 15 goals in their last five matches in all competitions.
“The confidence is high, we have a good balance at the moment in the team and maybe it’s because we’ve been making more of our chances,” Wenger said. “The final ball is better. Is that because our finishing is better? It’s difficult to analyze at the moment, but what is for sure is that we score more goals. We score lots of goals. That’s what our game is about. We have a risky game and therefore it’s important that we take our chances.”
Arsenal tops Group A on 7 points, same as second-placed Paris Saint-Germain who grabbed a 3-0 win over FC Basel.
