Charlie Austin found the back of the net twice on Sunday as Southampton took a 3-1 win over newcomers Burnley at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton put up a strong second half against the newcomers to end the day with all three points. Austin opened up the scoring in the 52nd minute after getting a scrappy goal after battling in front of goal on a set piece. He added a second from the penalty spot in the 66th minute to make it 3-0.
Southampton manager Claude Puel was pleased to grab the win and praised Austin for his performance.
“He was a little ill this week and I didn’t know if he could play this afternoon,” Puel said after the match.
“It’s important for the team with the character and a good spirit of course but all the players can make a good game this afternoon around him.
“You saw a very good player and a very good team in the second-half.”
Puel also praised midfielder Nathan Redmond who also found himself on the scoresheet as he made it 2-0 in the 60th minute with his second goal of the season.
“Nathan also came in with a very good performance, with very good technique. I asked him to shoot a bit more when he gets the chance and he did that!”
The win took Southampton up to 8th place with 12 points in eight games. The Saints takes on Italian side Inter in the Europa League on Thursday.
