Barcelona took an impressive 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the El Clasico on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.
Luis Suarez scored twice in the win for Barcelona, who were without their biggest star Lionel Messi as he started the game on the bench. Suarez opened up the scoring in the 11th minute and Neymar made it 2-0 before the end of the first half. Andres Iniesta made it 3-0 early in the second half in front of a shocked Madrid crowd. Messi came on in the second half for Barcelona, but it was Suarez who scored his second goal of the game with about 15 minutes remaining.
Barcelona manager Luis Enrique said that it was a night to remember for his side getting such a big win on the road.
“I’m satisfied not just for the victory, but for the way we did it.” Enrique told fcbarcelona.com after the win. “We were better and the team knew what we wanted and we got it. “We made it into their area with ease and created a lot of chances. “We were effective both on attack and on defence.”
The win extends Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to six points. It could shrink down to four if Atletico Madrid wins over Real Betis on Sunday. Barcelona tops the table with 30 points after 12 games, Real Madrid sits in second with 24 and Atletico Madrid sits in third with 23.
Enrique also spoke about Messi’s return to the pitch after being out with a knee injury.
“It was a relatively easy decision to leave Messi on the bench to start the game,” Enrique said. “Both he and I thought it was the best decision after such a long injury.”
