Manchester United legend David Beckham has some words of encouragement to Memphis Depay on how to handle wearing the iconic No 7 shirt.
The shirt is the most legendary at the club, having been worn by legends like Bryan Robson, George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo. Depay chose the number after coming over from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.
So far, Depay has had a tough time living up to the standard that United has for the No 7 shirt. There’s been a few players in recent time that hasn’t had the best of time wearing the number, including Angel Di Maria, Antonio Valencia and Michael Owen.
But Beckham says that Depay shouldn’t see the No 7 shirt as a intimidating, but inspirational.
“The No 7 is special for Manchester United,” Beckham told The Daily Mail. “I don’t see it as an intimidation, I see it as an honor.
“When you get given the No 7 shirt, it doesn’t matter who has worn it in the past or what that player has achieved. It’s special and personally I don’t think it comes with any pressure. It was always an inspiration for me. What has happened to the No 7 in the last couple of years doesn’t interest me.”
Beckham didn’t always wear No 7 for United, but got it by chance after the club signed Teddy Sheringham in 1997.
“I always wanted the No 7 shirt because of Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona, but I never thought I’d get it,” Beckham said.
“Then the manager called me and said he’d signed Teddy Sheringham and he wanted No 10. There wasn’t really a conversation to be honest! I didn’t argue the fact.
“I’ve never seen it as my shirt. It was George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona. I just want whoever is No 7 to do well and keep Manchester United as one of the best clubs in the world, if not the best.”
