Bendtner Believes Denmark Can Make It

Nicklas Bendtner believes that Denmark can get turn things around against Sweden in the Euro 2016 qualification playoffs.

Sweden won the first leg 2-1 at Friends Arena in Solna on Saturday. Emil Forsberg scored the opening goal for the Swedes, and captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. But the Danes got the all important away goal in the 80th minute thanks to a strike from Nicolai Jorgensen.

“It was important that we scored,” Bendtner told Sportbladet. “For long stretches we played the Swedes on their term, with long balls and power, which they do really well.”

The away goal could end up playing a big part in the outcome of the matchup, but Bendtner still thinks the Swedes has the advantage, being up one goal.

“Of course Sweden has the advantage,” Bendtner said. But at Parken we are going to have strong support from the fans, like we always have.”

Bendtner also said that he thinks that things could have been a lot worse, as the Swedes had several chances to extend their lead.

“With the chances they created, they could have gotten out even more,” Bendtner said. “The situation could have been a lot worse. Luckily for us, they didn’t score more goals. When they had the play, it could have been a whole different game.

“Our goal changed this playoff matchup altogether. We had counted on having to score at Parken, but now 1-0 is enough.

Bendtner was also asked about his feeling heading into the second leg.

“I’m a believer,” Bendtner said. I believe that we can do it through playing like we did during the opening 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes.”
