Carragher Praises Klopp’s Start At Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool already looks different under Jurgen Klopp’s management.

Klopp has only been with Liverpool for a short time, and the team earned a point away to Tottenham on Saturday after a scoreless draw at White Hart Lane. Carragher said on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports that Klopp has already implemented his tactics and dismisses that the better showing was a result of “new manager syndrome.”

“Over the week since he’s had the job, we’ve been reading about what he is like as a manager – pressing, how much distance they are going to cover,” Carragher said.

“Transition pressing was a massive thing for Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and it looks like it’s going to be a really big thing for this Liverpool team. One thing Klopp likes is for four or five players to get around the opposition player on the ball. He sees transition as a great opportunity to score a goal.

Carragher did say that there are some areas of the pitch where Liverpool will have to improve, particularly when having possession of the ball, but he firmly believes that the Reds will be a tough opponent for any team in the league going forward.

“It’s not going to be an enjoyable game playing against Liverpool now if they continue to press like that. And they will.

“He’s come in on day one and they’ve had more sprints and covered more distance than everyone else. If it was that easy, why doesn’t everyone do it?”

Fellow pundit Gary Neville had some other questions about Liverpool’s style of play that we might get an answer on as Klopp’s tenure continues.

“It’s intriguing,” Neville said. “I question whether it’s the right tactic, it’s never won the Premier League like that. Wenger, Ferguson, Mourinho, Mancini, Pellegrini didn’t play football like that.

“That’s the intriguing thing – is it maintainable, is it achievable to continue to do that?”
