Carragher Says United Shouldn’t Go After Mourinho

Former Liverpool player turned pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United should not go after Jose Mourinho if Louis van Gaal is sacked.

Van Gaal is said to be on a short leash after United’s poor run of form and less than exciting playing style this season. The Red Devils have gone six games without a win, and is coming off back-to-back losses to newcomers Bournemouth and Norwich.

With the pressure mounting, a lot of rumors are circulating that United will go after former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho if van Gaal is let go. But Carragher believes that this would be the wrong move for the club.

“Is Jose the perfect fit for United? I’d say no,” Carragher said on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football.

“If I imagine Manchester United for the last 50/60 years, what they’re about.

“Winning trophies? Jose massively ticks that box.

“Bringing young players through? No. Playing exciting, cut-throat football, going for every game? He doesn’t tick that box either.

“If that is someone they go for, I think it will show the fear that the Manchester United board has and some of the supporters have of other teams getting away from them.

“Also the fact of Pep Guardiola may be going to City, and they’re thinking ‘We’re falling behind here’.

“So they’re actually going to forget some of the principles that have made the club what they are, and they’re that desperate to get back to winning trophies.”
