Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla thought the Gunners deserved the 2-1 win over Southampton, with the Spaniard scoring the winner deep into stoppage time.
It was Southampton that took the lead in the game, after an own goal by goalkeeper Petr Cech. Dusan Tadic hit a free-kick that went off the bar and hit Cech in the back of the head before trickling over the goalline. The Gunners tied things up in the 29th minute through centre back Laurent Koscielny who scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick from inside the penalty area.
Cazorla nabbed the winner from the penalty spot in the 95th minute after Jose Fonte had brought down Olivier Giroud inside the penalty area by tugging on the Frenchman’s shirt. Cazorla believes that Arsenal got what they deserved in the end.
“I think we played much better than them,” Cazorla told the club’s official website. “It was true the first 30 minutes in the first half we needed to press a little high. We had control of the game and we had a few chances through them. They had a good chance in the second half with Shane Long, but I think we deserved it.”
Cazorla also gave his thoughts on the goal by Koscielny, who showed some great skill to get the ball into the back of the net on his 31st birthday.
“It is amazing,” Cazorla said. “He is one of the best defenders in the world, and we are lucky he plays for Arsenal so congratulations to LoLo – and happy birthday my friend.”
