Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says he wants to add another defender, as he feels he has too few options at the back.
Chelsea grabbed their second 2-1 win of the young Premier League season as they defeated Watford on Saturday. Just like in the opening fixture against West Ham, they got the three points after a late winner by Diego Costa. But after the game, Conte vented his concern about the lack of options in defense. With Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry, and Cesar Azpilicueta starting the match for the Blues, they only had one defender on the bench in 19-year-old Ola Aina.
“If you look now at our squad, we have only five defenders – four that started today and an academy player Ola Aina,” Conte told Sky Sports.
“Ola is very good – he has great potential – but with any young player you must work to put them in the first team. Sure, he has a good future.
“If one defender is injured or banned, then we are in trouble, but the club and me we know this and we are talking every day to improve the squad.
“We know that this market is very difficult. It’s crazy. I don’t want to buy only to buy. I want to buy the right profile for Chelsea, the right investment for the solution and for the future.”
French central defender Kurt Zouma is still out injured, while American defender Matt Miazga seems to be heading out on a loan deal to gain some experience.
