Del Bosque Backs Diego Costa

Diego Costa has received a lot of criticism for his behavior on the field, but his national team coach Vicente Del Bosque supports his striker.

The 27-year-old Brazilian-born Spanish international has been involved in several incidents during his time at Chelsea, and has the reputation of being one of the dirtiest players in the Premier League.

The criticism was not as bad last season when he was scoring goals on the regular, ending up with 20 league goals in 26 appearances as Chelsea won the title.

This season has been a lot tougher for both Costa and Chelsea as the reigning champions are in 16th place after 12 games and Costa standing on two goals in nine games.

“We all know his character,” Del Bosque told The Daily Mirror ahead of Spain’s friendly against England on Friday. “But we don’t feel we pick him because we owe him anything.

“He was picked because we believe in him, it is a question of confidence.

“Maybe he should smooth out his character and his behaviour but we believe in him.”

Del Bosque said that Costa’s form is not just on him, as he believes that Chelsea’s underperforming has a big influence.

“I think when a team isn’t playing well it’s not down to a single element and with Chelsea not playing well this season all of their elements are being affected by it.”

Spanish teammate Juan Mata believes that Costa hasn’t lost his scoring touch.

“Right now we’re in the same team, Spain, and we want him to score goals.

“He’s not in the best moment right now as he’s not scoring as many as last season but I’m sure he’ll soon start to score for Chelsea and for us as he’s not forgotten how to.”
