Everton has booked a place in the Capital One Cup semifinals after defeating Middlesbrough 2-0 on the road on Tuesday.
Gerard Deulofeu gave Everton the lead in the 20th minute and eight minutes later Romelu Lukaku made it 2-0 with a great header after a cross by Deulofeu.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez was delighted to get the road win and move on to the semifinals.
“I thought it was a fantastic occasion,” Martinez told evertonfc.com after the win. “We knew whoever you play away from home you need to be mature and control the game and I thought we did that really well, especially after what happened after the weekend when we went 2-0 up.
“It is a terrific feeling to be in the semi-final, because a club with our heritage and history should be aiming for those types of moments, and that is for the fans who came in huge numbers.”
Although Middlesbrough plays in the Championship, they currently sit in second place, Martinez was very pleased with the defensive effort and the clean sheet.
”I thought we defended really well and we had good attacking opportunities when maybe we should have taken the better option,” Martinez said.
“The two goals were exceptional pieces of quality which you can never take for granted.
“But, after going 2-0 up, to keep the clean sheet was probably the most pleasing aspect.”
