Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has revealed that Idrissa Gueye is getting close to a move away from Villa Park to join Everton.
Villa were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season after a really poor campaign that saw them only grab 17 points in 38 matches. Gueye, 26, signed for Villa last summer, and it looks like his stint at the club will end after just one year as Everton has activated Gueye’s buyout clause. Di Matteo revealed that the deal is getting close and that he expects the Senegalese international to leave the club.
“It’s public Everton have triggered his clause and he’s going to leave,” Di Matteo said. “There’s no news so far but the expectation is, once personal terms are agreed and a medical [is done], he’s going to go.
“There are other clubs interested, that’s right, but the only official bid so far has been from Everton.
“There’s not much I can do because he had a clause in his contract and that’s something I inherited and my hands are tied. We will be losing him.
“The fact he is leaving is basically down to the clause he has in his contract, otherwise there would be no chance.
“We’re not a club looking to sell. We don’t have to, we don’t need to.”
It’s been reported that the release clause for Gueye is set at £7.1 million, which is £1.9 million less than what Villa paid last summer to get him from French side Lille.
