Hughes Praise Stoke After Win Over Everton

Stoke City managed to come back against Everton and ended up taking a 4-3 win at Goodison Park on Monday after a late goal by Marko Arnautovic.

Xherdan Shaqiri scored twice in the win. The Swiss winger gave Stoke the lead in the 16th minute, but Romelu Lukaku tied things up six minutes later. Shaqiri scored his second of the game to retake the lead for Stoke right before halftime.

But Everton came back once more in the second half and managed to take a 3-2 lead after goals by Lukaku and Gerard Deulofeu. Then it was Stoke’s turn to make a comeback as Joselu tied the game at 3-3 in the 80th minute, and in added time Arnautovic scored the winner from the penalty spot.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes was very pleased with the win.

“These types of games can be difficult over the Christmas period because they come around in quick succession,” Hughes told stokecityfc.com after the game.

“I thought we played really well today and found ourselves behind in a game where we didn’t really gift them too many opportunities.

“Even though we went from a winning position to a losing position, that didn’t let that deter or disappoint us and that’s one of the most pleasing things.

“We weren’t ready to accept that we were going to get beaten today, we had that quality and showed real determination.

“If we can keep that up at a really good standard then we can look forward to another successful season.”

Hughes also had some special praise for Shaqiri, as the Swiss international scored twice in the game.

“It was only a matter of time that he would score and I think people have seen in recent weeks that he’s been getting to grips with his league,” Hughes said.

“He’s starting to learn what opposition players will do to stop his threat, but he is an intelligent footballer and he knows how to affect a game positively.

“He’s done that today not just with his goals, which we are delighted about, but also in his overall general play.

“He has shown a real desire, determination and understanding about what the Premier League is about.”
