Koeman Wants Southampton Board To Spend

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman wants the club to spend some money if they end up selling more players.

Southampton players has been a hot commodity on the transfer market in recent years. The club has lost several big names in the past two summers, including Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers, Morgan Schneiderlin, and Nathaniel Clyne.

This season, it’s Sadio Mane who is drawing the attention of bigger clubs, with Manchester United reportedly eyeing a move for the Senegalese international.

Koeman was asked ahead of Southampton’s clash with Liverpool on Wednesday how he felt about the situation.

“How do I feel about it? Quiet, easy, easy-going,” Koeman told The Guardian. “Because you have to know the situation of the club and you have to know the ambition of those kind of players. It’s normal that there is interest. It’s a compliment to everybody in the club and the scouting has to be prepared – again – when we lose players.”

Koeman feels like the club needs to reinvest some of the money if they decide to sell more players.

“When I came to the club, I knew already that we would lose some good players, and we lost, after last season, Schneiderlin and Clyne, important players for the team, important positions in the team,” Koeman said. “Of course, we would like to keep the best players because that means we can grow and grow.

“If not, we need to spend money, and we don’t spend a lot of money. After the last transfer window there was one team in the Premier League who got money out of the transfer window, and that was Southampton. Nobody else. Everyone else spent more money than they got in.

“I’d like to change that but I’m realistic. I know the situation of the club. The club is growing and growing and growing. I hope we can do more for the next couple of years. That would be important for the club.”
