Lalas says LA Galaxy shouldn’t go after Rooney

Wayne Rooney

Former United States international and LA Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas is warning the club from going after Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

With Rooney being dropped from the starting lineup for both United and the English national team, rumors have been circulating that the 31-year-old forward could be leaving Old Trafford, despite manager Jose Mourinho saying that he is happy with the player. One possible destination that has been speculated in the media in MLS and the LA Galaxy. With Steven Gerrard leaving the club, they will have a Designated Player spot open for Rooney.

Lalas, 46, is warning the Galaxy that Rooney might not be the best replacement for Gerrard, and that he might not give the best value for the huge amount of money it would take to bring him over.

“They got little return on the Steven Gerrard investment and does Rooney still have much to give and something which works in the MLS, even if he is five years younger than Gerrard?” Lalas told the Sun.

“Are you replacing a player who had limited involvement and limited impact, with yet another player who will have limited involvement and limited impact? If Rooney, at 31, doesn’t still have the things which made him great, then it’s problematic.

“Living in Beverly Hills is great. But if you don’t couple it with performances on the field then you are just stealing money. The player he is now isn’t the player of 10 years ago – but then no one is.”

Rooney came off the bench in the scoreless draw against Burnley on Saturday. He’s started on the bench in the last five league games.
