Manchester United took a 4-1 win over Fenerbahce on Thursday at Old Trafford in the Europa League to go joint top of the group with Feyenoord.
Paul Pogba picked up two goals in the win, with Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard also finding the back of the net. United dominated the match, and looked a lot better going forward compared to what they did in the scoreless draw against Liverpool on Monday. Manager Jose Mourinho was pleased to pick up a much-needed three points.
“I chose this team because I felt it was the one to win, because after such an intense game on Monday I felt that some of these players would be in better condition to perform,” Mourinho said. “I will start thinking about Chelsea tomorrow. Am I happy with the performance? Yes. Happy with individual performances? Yes. I am happy with the result as well which is the most important thing, because the group is difficult.”
Mourinho stressed the importance of staying perfect at home in the tournament.
“I think we played well in parts but after we got the fourth goal we stopped, it is natural,” Mourinho said. “I’m never happy to concede a goal but that’s the nature of the players, a lot of changes, so okay that’s acceptable. We have six points and two wins at home now. It’s important to make it nine points from home and get some more away.”
The Portuguese manager also took a little dig at the media, as Pogba has been under a lot of criticism for not lighting the league on fire right away.
“This is England. This is English football,” Mourinho said. “One day you are phenomenal and the next you are really bad. We know how good he really is and especially me, along with other football people, know that every top player needs time to adapt to a new league.”
