Manchester United snagged a 1-0 win over Zorya Luhansk at Old Trafford in the Europa League on Thursday to pick up their first win in the tournament.
After suffering a 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord on the opening round of games, the Red Devils bounced back with a win over Zorya thanks to a goal by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish striker found the back of the net in the 69th minute with a header from close range after Wayne Rooney mishit a shot.
Manager Jose Mourinho was pleased with picking up the much-needed three points. \
“Yeah, it was difficult,” Mourinho told the club’s official website. “We had our chances in the first half, we could obviously score and have a different match, but we didn’t. All the time, they [Zorya] stayed very well organised with lots of people behind the ball. The danger was hidden but they were always ready to do something on the counter-attack. The game was difficult but it was important to win.”
The Portuguese manager also had some special praise for Ibrahimovic. The Swede has scored six goals in 10 matches in all competitions this season. But Mourinho said Ibrahimovic does much more than just scoring goals.
“He’s a tremendous player,” Mourinho said. “Even if he’s not scoring goals, the dynamic he brings to the team, the movement and the leadership in attacking organization, no-one can believe his age. What matters is the quality, and the quality is amazing.”
In the other Group A match, Fenerbahce defeated Feyenoord 1-0 after a goal by Emmanuel Emenike. United takes on Stoke City at Old Trafford on Sunday in the Premier League.
