AS Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev claims that Manchester United and Chelsea let Radamel Falcao down, and not the other way.
The 30-year-old Colombian striker spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Old Trafford with United, but was deemed a failure after only scoring four goals in 29 appearances in all competitions. Last season he went out on loan to Chelsea, where he mustered one goal in 12 appearances.
Falcao is now back at Monaco and scored one goal in each leg against Fenerbahce in the qualifiers, which earned Monaco a place in the Champions League. He made his return from a slight injury in Monaco’s 4-1 over Lille over the weekend, and is set to face Tottenham on Wednesday at Wembley. Vasilyev thinks that both United and Chelsea let Falcao down and rushed him back from injury.
“Both clubs in England failed to relaunch him,” Vasilyev told the Daily Mail. “I don’t know whether Manchester United and Chelsea did not have the patience or the desire to do that but I am quite sure this year we will see Falcao at his previous best.
“He is the same Falcao as he ever. We’ve seen that in pre-season. He scores goals, he’s there and he is motivated, we are motivated and I think this will be his year.”
Falcao suffered a serious knee injury in 2014, but Vasilyev believes Monaco will benefit from being patient with him.
“You have to be patient but the big clubs have other topics on their agenda,” Vasilyev said. “If you sign a player of this magnitude after a big injury it takes time and games to get him back into shape.
“This is what we will do and what Manchester United and Chelsea didn’t do, failed to do or didn’t want to do.
“We all see the qualities are there and it is a matter of time. Monaco will make every effort and you will see a very different Falcao this season to the one you saw in England.”
