Palace Pummels Newcastle

Crystal Palace smashed visiting Newcastle United 5-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday in what manager Alan Pardew called a “pivotal” win.

Palace fell behind early after a goal by Papiss Demba Cisse in the 10th minute. But the Eagles responded in great fashion, scoring two goals in a three-minute span to take the lead. James McArthur tied the game up in the 14th minute with a shot that took a fortunate deflection and went in behind Robert Elliot in the Newcastle net. Yannick Bolasie made it 2-1 in the 17th minute. Wilfried Zaha extended the lead in the 41st minute.

Palace added two more goals in the second half through Bolasie and McArthur who both left the game with a brace.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland last weekend it was important for Palace to bounce back with a win in order to stay in the race for a top 8 finish. Manager Alan Pardew was extremely pleased with the performance from his side.

“We were really on it tonight,” Pardew told cpfc.co.uk after the win.

“It was a kind of pivotal game for us today, whoever the opposition was. It was a pivotal game in our season.

“Were we going to become a mid-table team and just drift around there or were we going to put ourselves back in contention with those top eight sides?

“The top eight sides in the Premier League are really, really good sides. They’re the sides we’re competing with, we’ve put ourselves back in there with the Evertons and the Tottenhams as well.”
