Real Madrid has gone out with a statement saying that they believe that Karim Benzema is innocent and has no part in the recent sex tape blackmailing scandal.
The 27-year-old striker was questioned by French authorities and is suspected of being involved in a blackmailing plot against Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena. A sex tape featuring Valbuena was reportedly used to try and blackmail the French international and the BBC reports that Benzema had talked to Valbuena about the tape “on behalf of a childhood friend.”
If charged and convicted, Benzema could face a minimum of five years in jail under French law. Benzema’s lawyer, Sylvain Cormier, told reporters that “Karim Benzema has nothing to hide” and that his client is innocent.
“He supports his friend, Mathieu Valbuena, with all his heart,” Cormier said. “He took no part, I state this again – no part – in the blackmail or blackmail attempts.”
Real Madrid issued the following statement in support of their player on Thursday on the club’s website:
“Karim Benzema returned to training this evening at Real Madrid City after making a statement to the French authorities in Versailles.
The Real Madrid C. F. president, Florentino Pérez, held a meeting with the player in which he gave him his full support and expressed his confidence that his actions were in good faith and that he is completely innocent.
The club values and recognizes the professional commitment, the displays of camaraderie with his team-mates and the impeccable attitude he has shown as a core member of the first team squad for the more than six seasons that he has been a part of Real Madrid.”
