Rooney Not A Given In United Lineup

Louis van Gaal has warned Wayne Rooney that it’s not a given that he will walk straight into the lineup against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

United takes on PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday, but van Gaal said that Rooney might not be in the starting XI after missing time with illness.

“That is not automatic,” Van Gaal told The Daily Mirror at the pre-match press conference. “It is always a decision of the manager.

“I compare, I compare always players with each other and I take into account that how fit they are and how fit they show in the training sessions.

“That’s why Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney have to show it on the training ground.

“Then I have to compare players with who are the best players to fit in with our game-plan. That is the same procedure with every match.”

Van Gaal also gave an update on the injury situation at the club ahead of the PSV fixture at Old Trafford.

“We have five injured players,” van Gaal said. “Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia were already out, like Michael Carrick, and last match we had Ander Herrera and Phil Jones.

“They cannot play, the other players are available.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger did not train on Tuesday, but van Gaal said that the German midfielder just needed a day off to rest.

United tops Group B with seven points, one point ahead of PSV and Wolfsburg. Last time the team met, PSV took a 2-1 win and United also lost Shaw who suffered a broken leg.
