Sunderland Victorious In Tyne-Wear Derby

Sunderland took a 3-0 win in the derby at home against Newcastle United on Sunday to pass their rivals in the standings.

Sam Allardyce got his first win as Sunderland manager on Sunday as the Black Cats won 3-0 over the Magpies. The big turning point of the game came in added time in the first half when Fabricio Coloccini was sent off by referee Robert Madley after a challenge inside the penalty box.

Adam Johnson scored on the ensuing penalty kick. Sunderland added two more goals in the second half through Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher.

Allardyce was delighted to get his first win with Sunderland.

“After last week where we didn’t get the rub of the green and a few decisions went against us, this week we’ve had a number which went in our favour,” Allardyce told safc.com after the game.

“The sending off was a big decision in the game and we took advantage of playing against 10 men.

“It’s a great confidence boost for the players, scoring three goals against their rivals and keeping a clean sheet for the first time.

“It’s also a great relief for the players to get their first win of the season and for me as a new manager. I was wanting to win so badly today and getting the result we have is very important for us.”

His counterpart at Newcastle, Steve McClaren was not happy with the decision to send off Coloccini.

“The defining moments were two ref decision he got wrong,” McClaren told The Express. “Gini Wijnaldum’s ball was handballed by Lee Cattermole and the penalty for them was never a penalty. The penalty and red card was a double whammy.

“In the first half the team were excellent. I was totally relaxed. We were in control.

“I said to players that’s what we must continue. If we continue doing that and get decisions right then we’ll do OK.”

Sunderland now sits in 18th place with six points, with Newcastle right behind them in 19th.
