Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club is looking to add another central defender due to Per Mertesacker being out injured.
The former German international suffered a knee injury last week and will be out of action for a while after undergoing surgery. Wenger shared the news ahead of Arsenal’s clash with the MLS All-Stars.
“We have bad news on Per Mertesacker,” Wenger told arsenal.com.
“He played in Lens on Friday night, he finished the game and had a little pain on his knee. We found out the next day that it was much more serious than expected.
“He had surgery yesterday in Germany. It all went well. I know you will ask me for how long he will be out. I don’t know that, it’s months, but I don’t know how long he will be out for.”
Wenger also said that they will be searching for an experienced defender to join the Gunners at the Emirates in replacement of Mertesacker.
“We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience,” Wenger said.
“We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in.”
Mertesacker has made 208 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, along with 104 caps for Germany before retiring from international play after the World Cup win in 2014.
Arsenal takes on the MLS All-Star team on Thursday at the Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
