Barcelona legend Xavi believes that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere could become one of England’s best players if he can stay fit.
Wilshere, 23, has been seen as one of England’s biggest talents for several years, but he has had troubles with injuries. Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi believes that Wilshere possess some special qualities in his game.
“He played a fantastic game against us [in 2011],” Xavi said in an interview with Sport magazine. “Let’s not forget he was just 20 or 21 years old (Wilshere was 19). It’s just a shame he got injured so many times over the past two years.
“If he gets going and a bit of continuity as well, he may make the difference for both Arsenal and the English national team. He is a different kind of English player.
“Even though he has been nourished in a physical type of football, he is really talented, gifted for passing and he does not give the ball away. He does not seem to be English!”
Wilshere has been struggling with injuries throughout his career and is currently rehabbing to get back from a hairline fracture in his leg that he suffered right before the start of the season.
“The recovery is going well but it’s frustrating of course,” Wilshere said on Sky Sports. “I think this one was mentally the toughest one to take because I had a good pre-season.”
“It was literally the day before the Community Shield match. I was ready, fit and expected to play and then all of a sudden it happened. It was just a freak accident and it is tough. But I’ve got good people around me, good family and friends and they really help.
“But it’s going well. I’m pain free, out the boot and off the crutches and moving around. As I said, this one was mentally the toughest one to take.
“I’ve done it so many times where I’ve put a date on it and then people say I’ve a setback if I’m a week late. I had surgery five weeks ago and it’s going good. I’m in the gym every day.”
