Don’t Write Off Rooney Yet Says Redknapp

Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes that England captain Wayne Rooney still has a lot to give for the Three Lions.

England beat France 2-0 on Tuesday in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium. The game became a show of sympathy and unity with France as Wembley was dressed in the French colors to show support after the terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday.

The national anthem was sung by both sets of fans and many fans doned both English and French colors. The game was more of a side note to the bigger picture, but England did came out with a 2-0 win after goals by Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney. Alli, 19, gave England the lead in the 39th minute. The young Tottenham midfielder has really blossomed out this season and could be a joker in Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad.

Rooney scored early in the second half to make it 2-0, and the Manchester United striker still have a lot left in the tank according to Redknapp, who played 11 years at rivals Liverpool and made 17 appearances for England.

“I think playing alongside Harry Kane has given Rooney a new lease of life,” Redknapp wrote for The Daily Mail. “He’s thrived in a deeper role as a No 10, which is his best position – and he showed that again at Wembley.

From the very first minute, when he produced a crisp touch to control the ball, I thought: ‘He could have one of those brilliant nights, here’.

“His goal capped an excellent display and he remains the first player his team-mates look for when they get the ball.

His aura among the squad has not diminished one bit. If it wasn’t for the outstanding Dele Alli, then Rooney would have been man of the match.”
