The second weekend of Premier League action is in the books and as everyone predicted, super club Leicester City are near the top with six points from their first two games.
While very few prophesied the electric start for the Foxes, a number of top teams (mainly from the northwest of England) have put on stellar performances during the season’s first two contests. While both Manchester sides and Liverpool may round out the top four in the team table, here are three individual performances that warrant some recognition from soccer fans around the globe.
Romelu Lukaku, Striker, Everton
While fans of Liverpool’s blue club have been awfully critical of their team this summer for not splashing cash after last season’s disappointing finish, Roberto Martinez’s men have been a pleasant surprise through two games in the EPL season, scoring five goals across their first pair of contests.
Central to that scoring prowess has been Belgian international Romelu Lukaku, who netted a brace in the Toffees’ 3-0 win over Southampton. Lukaku will be key to the success of Everton this season, so fans around Goodison Park must be thrilled to see him scoring at such an alarming rate.
After last year’s disappointing season, Lukaku seems much more intense and ready for the upcoming Premier League season than he was at this point last year. He acknowledged after Saturday’s game that he feels more fit than last season and will look to produce a performance that is up to his standards for the Toffees this season. If Lukaku continues to score goals, Everton may challenge for a Europa League spot.
Andre Ayew, Winger, Swansea City
Since joining the Swans this summer from Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseilles in France, Andre Ayew has been nothing short of spectacular. The Ghanaian international has been a force on the wings for Swansea, scoring in both of the Premier League games he has played in thus far in his career.
During the Swans’ 2-0 drubbing of Newcastle this Saturday, Ayew was a constant fixture in Swansea’s offensive third, looking extremely dangerous throughout the contest and frustrating the Newcastle back line.
While Ayew was a thorn in the Magpies side all day, he didn’t find the back of the net until the second half, when he slotted a Jefferson Montero cross into the back of the net with a powerful header in the 52nd minute.
The partnership between Montero and Ayew will be devastating to Swansea’s opponents this season, with the Swans already putting up four goals in two games against Newcastle and Chelsea. Ayew has the potential to become a star in the Premier League, and can join the ranks of Swansea strikers who have come into their own with the Welsh club.
Sergio Aguero, Striker, Manchester City
Sergio Aguero was simply phenomenal against Chelsea this weekend. He moved with pace off the ball, got into key attacking situations, and opened his Premier League scoring tally in the first half. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better pure goal scorer in all of Europe (not named Messi or Ronaldo) apart from Aguero. He kept the Chelsea defense, the best of the Premier League last season, on its heels, and even forced Jose Mourinho to sub John Terry in favor of more speed.
It’s still early in the Premier League season, but City appear to be the prohibitive favorites. With Toure and Aguero in form, a bevy of other attacking talent, and a team with title-winning experience, it’s hard to imagine the sky blues facing a challenge from any team in their current state.
However, as anyone who’s watched the Premier League knows, things change rapidly over the course of the season, so it will be up to Man City to retain their current run of form.
