Another weekend, another stacked lineup of soccer action. With some clubs playing in the Champions League and Europa League during the week, they now return to league action. Fans can look forward to a huge game on Saturday as Chelsea and Arsenal do battle in London. With a win, Arsenal could send Chelsea into the relegation zone. Here are a few of the games that you should keep an extra eye on this weekend.
Chelsea – Arsenal (Premier League Matchday 6):
The weekend kicks off with one of the biggest games, as Chelsea hosts Arsenal in a huge London derby. Arsenal’s form has been a lot better compared to the reigning champions. The Gunners sits in 4th with 10 points after five games. They did suffer a tough 2-1 loss against Dinamo Zagreb mid-week in the Champions League, but that might act as extra motivation to get a good result against their crosstown rivals.
Chelsea has been stumbling so far in the league and find themselves just above the relegation zone in 17th with just four points. The Blues did pick up a convincing 4-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League.
Aston Villa – West Bromwich Albion (Premier League Matchday 6):
Although Aston Villa – WBA is not as big of a game as when ASton Villa takes on Birmingham, it’s still a derby and derbies are always something special as the fans and players will want to go away with the bragging rights.
Villa has won the last two meeting between the sides, but WBA will not be an easy task. The Villans are coming off a difficult loss against Leicester City when they held a 2-0 lead but fell apart and lost 3-2. WBA sits in 14th place, one above Villa, with five points in five games and they’re coming off a scoreless draw against Southampton in a game where they were extremely dominated.
Chievo – Inter Milan (Serie A Matchday 4):
Inter has gotten off to a good start this season and tops the Serie A after three straight wins. The Nerazzurri is coming off a strong derby victory over AC Milan last weekend. Fredy Guarin scored the only goal of the game with a marvelous strike from distance in front of a fully packed Giuseppe Meazza stadium.
Chievo fans are enjoying a great start to the season as the Flying Donkeys has picked up two wins, beating Empoli 3-1 and Lazio 4-0, in three games. The team will be full of confidence as they managed to get a 1-1 draw on the road against reigning champions Juventus last weekend.
Tottenham Hotspur – Crystal Palace (Premier League Matchday 6):
Another London derby for fans to enjoy takes place on Sunday when Tottenham welcomes Crystal palace to White Hart Lane. The Spurs fans finally got to celebrate last weekend as the team got the first win of the season after beating Sunderland 1-0 on the road after a goal by Ryan Mason. Tottenham also grabbed a 3-1 victory over Qarabag FK in the Europa League mid-week with recent signing Heung Min Son scoring twice.
Palace has been one of the surprise teams so far to start the season, sitting in 6th with nine points after five games. They are coming off a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Manchester City where they stood up extremely well on defense but conceded a goal in added time.
Borussia Dortmund – Bayer Leverkusen (Bundesliga Matchday 5):
Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund will host Bayer Leverkusen at the Signal Iduna Park on Sunday and the Gelbe Wand (Yellow Wall) will do whatever they can to help their team stay perfect. Dortmund has four straight wins to start the season and leads over Bayern Munich on goal difference. Last weekend they beat Hannover 4-2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a brace and has five goals in four games.
Bayer Leverkusen find themselves down in 13th place after two wins and two losses to start the season. They are coming off a 1-0 loss against SV Darmstadt last weekend in the league, but did beat BATE Borisov 4-1 mid-week in the Champions League.
