West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic isn’t at all surprised that the English teams performed so poorly in the opening games in the European cups.
In the Champions League, Manchester United lost 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven from the Netherlands, Manchester City lost 2-1 to Juventus and Arsenal lost by the same score on the road to Dinamo Zagreb. Chelsea was the only English team in the tournament that managed to grab as win as they beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0.
Bilic, who took over West Ham during the summer, said that the Premier League must get over itself and realize that other teams in Europe are not to be taken lightly.
“Why are people so surprised when Manchester United lose a game against PSV? Man United is a bigger club and have a better team but many big clubs have lost at PSV,” Bilic told The Daily Mail.
Arsenal’s loss was scrutinized in the media, as Arsene Wenger and his men got a lot of flack by the British writers. Olivier Giroud received the brunt of the anger as he got sent off in the first half after receiving two yellow cards in the first half.
“It isn’t a shock. You can lose in Zagreb,” Bilic said about Arsenal’s loss to Dinamo. “It was a major surprise, the whole of Croatia is surprised, but it can happen.
“They play football there as well. They are a decent team, unbeaten in 42 games. I think they [England’s four teams] are going to qualify. That would be great and vital for the Premier League, but is it going to be easy for them? For Arsenal definitely not.”
