Manchester United has finalized a £36 million deal for Anthony Martial from AS Monaco. The player was revealed by the club on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old forward becomes the most expensive teenager in British soccer. Martial scored nine league goals for Monaco in the French Ligue 1 last season and is currently with the French national team in hopes of receiving his first cap in the coming international friendlies against Portugal and Serbia.
“I’m very happy because it’s a big club in England,” Martial said to manutd.com. “I’m very proud. I’m very happy because I worked hard for this and my family is very happy about it.
“I spoke with the coach, Louis van Gaal, and I know that I need to work very hard. It’s not easy to speak about myself but I am a very fast player. I hope that everything will go well for me at this club.”
Martial came to Monaco from Lyon where he came through the youth academy. Monaco failed to qualify for the Champions League, as they got knocked out in the qualification playoffs against Valencia. That could have been an underlying factor for the sale of Martial as it brings in some much needed revenue for the club.
United manager Louis van Gaal spoke to manutd.com about his newest signing.
“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential,” van Gaal said. “We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco.
“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”
