Anthony Martial had a dream debut for Manchester United on Saturday as he scored when United beat Liverpool 3-1 at Old Trafford.
United and Liverpool met up in one of English soccer’s most classic and heated rivalries on Saturday in Manchester. Most of the talk prior to kickoff was about Wayne Rooney being out of the squad after suffering a hamstring injury on Friday and Marouane Fellaini playing up front at the striker position.
The game got off to a rather sluggish start, with United having most of the possession. Fellaini got a chance early on after a sloppy play by Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, but his attempt to chip the ball over Mignolet failed miserably as he sent the ball way over the bar.
Things picked up in the second half, as United broke the deadlock in the 49th minute after a Daley Blind goal. Blind met a free-kick from Juan Mata and placed the ball high up behind Mignolet.
Ander Herrera got the start at the central attacking midfielder position, and the 26-year-old Spaniard made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Liverpool pulled one back in the 82nd minute after a beautiful display of skill from Christian Benteke as he pulled off a spectacular volley inside the penalty area.
Anthony Martial came in off the bench in the 65 minute, and in the 86th minute he trickled through the Liverpool defense and slotted the ball in behind Mignolet and made his debut into something really special. United paid AS Monaco an initial fee of $37 million for the 19-year-old Frenchman, and if his debut was any indication of what’s to come, then the high transfer fee might have been worth it.
