Steven Naismith was the hat-trick hero on Saturday as Everton grabbed a 3-1 victory over reigning champions Chelsea.
Chelsea has had a terrible start to the new season, as manager Jose Mourinho and his men has only managed to grab four points in five games, which leaves them in 16th place ahead of the rest of the games on Matchday 5.
Everton usually plays well at home at Goodison Park, but a 3-1 win over the champions is something that few supporters would dare dream about before kickoff.
Naismith, opened up the scoring in the 17th minute after a great cross by left back Brendon Galloway that Naismith headed in from close range. Galloway is enjoying a run in the team after the injury troubles to Leighton Baines.
Naismith was not in the starting lineup on Saturday, but came on in the ninth minute after Muamer Besic had to leave the game due to injury. It turned out to be a great outing for the 28-year-old forward. Last season, Naismith scored six goals in 31 appearances, so he’s already halfway towards matching his Premier League best.
Naismith made it 2-0 five minutes later with a beautiful left-footed strike from a couple of yards outside the penalty area. Everton did a good job at winning the ball and hitting Chelsea on the counterattack.
Nemanja Matic pulled one back for Chelsea before halftime with a beautiful long range shot of his own that beat Tim Howard in the Everton net. But despite a vast advantage in ball possession, the defending champions failed to tie things up in the second half, and instead Naismith completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute.
Chelsea will take on Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League on Wednesday before meeting up with Arsenal on Saturday in a huge London derby.
