Newcastle Win Red Card Appeal

Newcastle won the wrongful dismissal claim of Fabricio Coloccini in the game against Sunderland on Sunday. The FA has rescinded Coloccini one-game suspension.

Coloccini was handed a red card by referee Robert Madley late in the first half in the 3-0 loss. Coloccini brought down Steven Fletcher inside the penalty area, and was handed a straight red card. Adam Johnson scored on the ensuing penalty to give Sunderland a 1-0 lead.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren said after the game that, “the penalty against us was wrong. I have seen lots of challenges like that and they’re never given.”

Newcastle filed a wrongful dismissal claim and the English Football Association released the following statement on Tuesday saying that the club had won their claim:

“Fabricio Coloccini will not serve a one-match suspension after his wrongful dismissal claim was successful.

“An Independent Regulatory Commission found that the match referee had made an obvious error in dismissing the Newcastle United defender for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity during the game against Sunderland on Sunday 25 October 2015.

“Newcastle United have been charged for failing to control their players in relation to their reaction to the match referee’s decision.

“The club have until 6pm on 30 October 2015 to respond to the charge.”

The damage of Madley’s decision during the game is already done, but the small silver-lining for Newcastle is that Coloccini will be available for selection against Stoke City on Saturday. The Magpies sits in 19th place in the Premier League table with six points in 10 games.
