Anthony Martial is nearing a £36 million move to Manchester United from AS Monaco. The 19-year-old striker has left the France squad to complete the move.
Martial is one of the most promising strikers under the age of 20 in Europe, and United has reportedly offered £36 million to get the player to Old Trafford. Martial was called up for the first time to the French national team for the friendlies against Portugal and Serbia, but has now left the camp to go to Manchester.
The Guardian reports that the French national team, lead by Didier Deschamps, allowed Martial to leave to undergo a medical exam to complete the transfer. Martial scored 12 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions last season and added five assists. Martial has represented France at the youth level, playing for the U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19, and U-21 teams.
Martial joined Monaco in 2013 after coming through the academy at Lyon and playing four games for Lyon in 2012-2013. Monaco paid £3.5 million plus bonuses for Martial in 2013. Reports say that Lyon wrote in a clause when they sold Martial to Monaco that they would get as much as 25 percent of any future transfer fee.
With Adnan Januzaj out on loan at Dortmund and Javier Hernandez reportedly being on his way to Bayer Leverkusen, United needs to bring in a forward or two before the Premier League transfer window closes on Tuesday as they would only have Wayne Rooney and James Wilson as natural strikers in the squad.
