Schweinsteiger Relishes Manchester Derby

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is eager to play in his first Manchester Derby on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger, 31, joined United in the summer from Bayern Munich. He ended up playing over 340 league games for Bayern. He also brought a wealth of experience from his time with the German national team, having won the 2014 World Cup along with two World Cup bronze medals (2006, 2010) and a silver medal from Euro 2008.

The German national team captain spent 13 season in Bayern Munich’s first-team, but says that there wasn’t a big rivalry in Munich. Bayern’s inner-city rival 1860 Munich has never been anywhere close to Bayern’s level and has spent the last 11 seasons in the 2. Bundesliga, Germany’s second division.

“I think it is something very special and we should be very happy that we have two big clubs in one city that are also playing in the Champions League,” Schweinsteiger told United Review.

“I remember when I was in Munich we were always looking for that, but the other team at 1860 Munich didn’t play so well! [Laughs] We were always looking for a derby but it was sadly not possible. Here, we can play lots of derbies and I am very happy about that.”

United host City at Old Trafford on Sunday. City currently tops the Premier League with 21 points in nine games. United sits in 3rd, two points behind their rivals. Last season United took a 4-2 at home in the derby after goals by Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling. For more on the Manchester Derby, click here.
