A goal from Marko Arnautovic secured a win for Stoke City over reigning champions Chelsea on Saturday at the Britannia Stadium.
Arnautovic’s goal came midway through the second half, as the Austrian international scored with a beautiful volley shot from inside the penalty area.
The win took Stoke up to 12th place and sent Chelsea down to 16th. Chelsea has lost seven out of the 12 league game so far this season. This was the second win for Stoke over Chelsea in less than two weeks as the Potters knocked Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup on penalties.
Stoke manager Mark Hughes was delighted with the performance and the three points.
“It was a great win and a great performance from every level I would suggest,” Hughes told stokecityfc.com after the win.
“You know you’re not going to be able to dominate possession. They can close you down and keep the ball very well with great individual talent, but we matched Chelsea throughout.
“We dealt with them really, really well and we had threats going forward as well so I’m delighted with everybody’s performance.
“I thought Xherdan had his best game for us and the lads at the back stuck with it while the midfield lads have put a shift in as well.
“It was a good move and a great pass that lead to the goal.
“Thankfully Marko has saw the opportunity and dispatched the ball with great technique.
“All in all it was a really satisfying performance and result.”
