Stoke Upset Manchester City

Stoke defeated league leaders Manchester City 2-0 after two goals by Marko Arnautovic at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

The home side got off to a dream start as they saw themselves up by two goals after just 15 minutes. Arnautovic opened up the scoring in the 7th minute, and then made it 2-0 in the 15th minute. City saw most of the possession, but the early double by Stoke secured the upset.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes was delighted with the win and the display of his front trio Arnautovic, Bojan Krkic and Xherdan Shaqiri.

“I know the quality that I have got inside the building and I went with Bojan up front today with Marko and Shaqiri either side of him,” Hughes told stokecityfc.com after the win.

“To be perfectly honest it has been in my mind for a good number of weeks now but I was never able to commit to it beforehand.

“Maybe that was a consequence of not being brave enough up until now, but I thought today was the perfect opportunity to go with it.

“It could have gone the wrong way of course, but in fairness I was incredibly confident that the players were ready to have a real go at it today.

“It was only ever going to work if the entire group brought into it, and they did that. From front to back we were absolutely fantastic today and I don’t think anybody can complain about the outcome of the game.”

Stoke went up to 10th place in the table, and City slipped down to 3rd.
