Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was extremely happy with the performance of Anthony Martial in the 3-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday.
The 19-year-old striker scored twice as the Red Devils came back from an early 1-0 deficit after Graziano Pelle had given Southampton the lead in the 13th minute. Martial grabbed his first goal in the 34th minute as he tied the game at 1-1. He then gave United the lead in the 50th minute after capitalizing on a poor back pass by a Southampton defender. Juan Mata made it 3-1 before Pelle grabbed his second of the night late in the game.
Van Gaal told manutd.com after the game that he likes the way Martial plays and that people might expect some more consitency despite his young age.
“He is always an attacking point for a lot of players and that I like in him,” van Gaal said. “He is always running in behind and that I like also. But he is an attacking point and he keeps the ball so he is very important for us already. You cannot say he is ahead of schedule. He has the talent to do it but the Premier League has a lot of rhythm and there is a lot of physical influence from the defenders, but he is also a strong guy. We can expect maybe more consistency that I had expected, but you never know. We are only three games in.”
With the win, United moved into second place in the Premier League, sitting two points behind leaders and crosstown rivals Manchester City.
