Copa America: Chile, Argentina Stay Undefeated

The group stage is over. Chile and Argentina were the two top nations that went through the group stage undefeated as both teams had two wins and a draw to top their groups. Paraguay also stayed undefeated after one win and two draws in Argentina’s group. Here’s a full roundup of Matchday 3.

Group A:

Chile crushed Bolivia 5-0 to end up on top of the group with 7 points. The result also helped out the Chileans goal difference as they end the group stage with 10 goals scored and three allowed. Another positive for Chile was the fact that three different players scored in the win over Bolivia with Charles Aranguiz scoring twice and Alexis Sanchez and Gary Medel getting one each. The last goal was an own goal by Bolivian defender Ronald Raldes. The result wasn’t a good one for Bolivia, but they still ended in second place in Group A and will go through to the quarterfinals where they will take on Peru. Chile will take on Uruguay.

Ecuador got their first and only win of the tournament with a 2-1 win over Mexico. Miller Bolanos opened up the scoring for the Ecuadorians in the 26th minute after he tapped in the ball from just a yard out after a great ball by Enner Valencia. Bolanos would then return the favor as he assisted on Valencia’s 2-0 goal in the 57th minute. Valencia got a partial breakaway and slotted the ball into the back of the net from inside the penalty area. Mexico failed to win a single game and ended up bottom of the group.

He has been rumored to be heading to a bigger club as Napoli missed out on the Champions League, and a game-winning goal in the Copa America will surely add to the rumors.

Higuain’s goal came in the 11th minute, when he showed some great ball handling skills as he received the ball by the penalty spot, spun around and hit the ball into the back of the net. Higuain almost added a second in the 22nd minute, but his shot was denied by the post. Jamaica stood up well in all their games but lost three straight by the score of 1-0.

Uruguay and Paraguay played a 1-1 draw at the Estadio La Portada de La Serena in La Serena. It was a result that put both nations into the quarterfinals. Jose Gimenez gave Uruguay the lead in the 29th minute with a header, but Lucas Barrios tied it up right before halftime.
