We saw several interesting result in the English Premier League on Saturday. Sunderland got thumped by Crystal Palace, Burnley lost a close one to Arsenal, and Aston Villa got a scrappy win over Tottenham to get them some space down to the relegation zone.
Aston Villa stood for the biggest upset on Saturday as they won 1-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur. It wasn’t a pretty game but Villa was the better side and Christian Benteke was the savior for Villa with the lone goal. Benteke is in fine scoring form after getting a hat trick in Villa’s previous game. The win means that Aston Villa now sits in 15th with 32 points in 33 games, six points down to the relegation zone.
Bottom-placed Leicester City got their sixth win of the season as they beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 after being down 2-1 in halftime. Jamie Vardy scored the winning goal in extra time. Leicester now has 25 points on the season, a single point behind Burnley and Queens Park Rangers and three points behind Hull just above the relegation zone with a game in hand. WBA sits in 14th with 33 points.
Crystal Palace put a beating to Sunderland on the road, and once again a lot of Sunderland supporters left the game early. That happened not too long ago when they got beaten by Villa, and at 3-0 many Sunderland fans decided it was time to go. Yannick Bolaise grabbed a hat trick for Palace and Glenn Murray got a goal and two assists. Sitting at 11th with 42 points, Palace have been a nice surprise this season and the fans can look forward to more Premier League soccer next season. Sunderland on the other hand is very involved in the relegation battle. They’ve been abysmal of late and currently sit in 16th with 29 points, only three points above the drop.
Southampton got things going in the second half in their game against Hull City and came out with a 2-0 win after goals by Jamie Ward-Prowse and Graziano Pelle. Southampton jump over Liverpool and take over the fifth spot in the table for now, Liverpool plays Newcastle on Monday, and if they can make that spot their own it would mean a spot in next season’s Europa League. Hull is just above the drop in 17th with 28 points, just two points ahead of QPR and Burnley.
Marko Arnautovic saved Stoke from defeat at the hands of West Ham United after he scored a goal late in extra time. Left back Aaron Cresswell gave West Ham an early lead after a great free kick in the 7th minute. Stoke had most of the possession and West Ham tried to protect the lead and hit Stoke on the counter attack, but Arnautovic came up big in the dying seconds of the game to save a point. Stoke is in no man’s land in 10th with 423 points. West Ham sits just above them in 9th, also with 43 points.
Swansea and Everton also drew 1-1 in a fairly even game. Everton definitely had more chances and had the 1-0 lead going into halftime after a goal by Aaron Lennon in the 41st minute. Jonjo Shelvey scored the equalizer in the second half from the penalty spot. Everton is having a disappointing season and 38 points for the 12th spot in the league is not good enough for a team that should be challenging for a Europa League spot. Swansea has 47 points and sits in 8th.
Arsenal dominated possession in their game against Burnley, but only managed to get a 1-0 win after Aaron Ramsey scored the lone goal in the 12th minute. Burnley did a good job defensively and Arsenal only had four shots on goal during the game. Arsenal is 2nd with 66 points, four points behind leaders Chelsea, but Arsenal has two more games played than Chelsea (Chelsea plays away to QPR on Sunday). Burnley sits in 19th with 26 points, three points from safety.
