Luis Suarez scored twice for Barcelona as the Catalans defeated Argentine side River Plate 3-0 in the Club World Cup Final on Sunday.
Suarez, who scored all three goals in Barcelona’s semifinals victory over Guangzhou Evergrande, kept on scoring and netted two more in the final. Lionel Messi got Barcelona on the board with a goal in the 36th minute. Suarez scored twice in the second half to secure the win. Both Messi and Neymar missed the semifinal game, but both of Barcelona’s superstars were on the pitch in the final against River Plate. Manager Luis Enrique revealed that Messi showed great leadership and hunger to play in the game.
“Just a few days Messi had renal colic and eight days ago Neymar suffered a slight injury and both have taken part [against River]. Messi could barely stand up but he still wanted to play in the semi-final,” Enrique told fcbarcelona.com. “He is a leader, we all know that, he is our reference point. But that the players with most weight in the dressing room are the first to show their desire to compete and win is a motivation to the rest.”
Enrique also said that the team should cherish the win as titles are tougher and tougher to get win.
“In football the future is uncertain,” Enrique said. “What is clear is that it is more and more difficult to win trophies. We are very happy.
“The level we were at today, any team would have had difficulty with us.”
Enrique did have a couple of kind words to say about the opponents.
“They competed well, they were brave,” Enrique said. “They are a well-organised team and Gallardo is an excellent coach. They were always in the game.”
