At the conclusion of Week 10 of the Premier League, things may be even murkier now than at the beginning of the season. Fans were treated to yet another Chelsea loss, a ho-hum Manchester derby, a stunning Tottenham blowout and Sunderland’s sixth consecutive victory in the Tyne-Wear derby.
West Ham United and Leicester City are headed for European competition, Chelsea are fending off relegation, and no one has any clue who will win the title this season. This season is shaping up to be a photo finish in the Premier League.
Here are the three stars from Week 10.
Adam Johnson, Winger, Sunderland
After a first half where rivals Newcastle United dominated the majority of possession and the pace of play, Sunderland were gifted an absolute miracle in the form of a Fabricio Colocinni red card. The Argentine defender and Newcastle skipper came running after Sunderland attacker Steven Fletcher, bringing him down in the box. The referee marked for infringement and awarded a penalty, leaving him little choice than to show Colocinni the red card and send him back to the dressing room.
Adam Johnson then cooly converted the penalty and ran the entire length of the field at St. James’ Park in celebration, incensing the riotous Sunderland fans and inspiring his team to complete the 3-0 victory. With this win, the Black Cats move about Newcastle in the table, and have now not lost a game to their northern rivals in almost three years. Sunderland fans will certainly have a lot to cheer about when it comes to their local derby.
Harry Kane, Striker, Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur fans will be happy to see Harry Kane’s name amongst the three stars of the weekend, after a tough start left many questioning if the prized Spurs’ forward was truly the talent he showed himself to be last season. Kane’s hat trick against Bournemouth has Tottenham fans believing again. While Kane’s final two goals came at a time when the game had already gotten away from Bournemouth, they will certainly give him confidence heading into upcoming games against Aston Villa, then rivals Arsenal.
If Kane can round into form, Spurs fans have to feel extremely confident about their team securing a top-four spot and a place in the Champions’ League next season. If Spurs can pull off a victory against Arsenal on November 8, the Tottenham fan base will be treated to the best celebration the team has seen in years.
Andy Carroll, Striker, West Ham United
While Carroll’s name is one few expected to see amongst the three stars, his game-winning goal against Chelsea on the weekend secured West Ham their most memorable victory in quite some time. The mighty Hammers took the game to Chelsea, and the sending off of Nemanja Matic only served to further bury the Blues.
Carroll’s goal was his first in quite some time, but West Ham fans will hardly be upset with the often injured striker scoring against Chelsea. West Ham have moved themselves up to third place in the EPL table, and look to be this year’s Southampton, in prime place to secure a spot in European competition. While many West Ham fans were critical of the Slaven Bilic hire, he has them playing their best soccer in decades, and seriously contending for a spot in the top seven of the table.
