City Through From CL Group Stage

Manchester City clinched a spot in the next round of the Champions League after beating Sevilla 3-1 on the road on Tuesday.

City took a commanding 2-0 within the first 11 minutes of the first half after goals by Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho. Benoit Tremoulinas pulled one back for the home team in the 25th minute, but Wilfried Bony restored the two-goal lead in the 36th minute.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini had spoken beforehand that his team was going for the win and they have now secured advancement from Group D with two games remaining after getting nine points in four games.

“I am very happy with the way we played,” Pellegrini told mcfc.co.uk after the game.

“It was a very good performance. I’m not sure it was the best or not but it was the performance we needed to qualify.

“We played a very good game – we scored three goals and missed three or four clear chances to score more goals.

“We had changed the way were playing and I was really pleased with the way the three midfielders played and pressed higher. Sevilla couldn’t cope with it.

“We had prepared to play one-touch football and that was the reason we created so many chances.

“We defended well too and dominated possession. I changed the system because I was not happy in the way were were playing against United and Norwich – it was not the team we normally see.

“Today, we returned to our normal style of play and tried to dominate possession.”

City tops Group D on nine points, one point ahead of Juventus. Sevilla sits in third with three points and Borussia Monchengladbach are last with two points.
