Ashley Cole looks be on his way out from AS Roma after the player was left off both the Serie A and Champions League squads and given shirt number 0.
Cole, 34, joined Roma last summer after spending eight year at Chelsea. But his Italian adventure seems to be ending rather quickly after he was left out of both the Serie A and the Champions League squads by Roma.
Roma recently signed Lucas Digne from Paris Saint-Germain, a move that made Cole expendable. Reports say that Cole turned down a move to Newcastle on deadline day, but now he will only be able to play for Roma in the league cup games. Cole has one year left on his deal with Roma and made 16 appearances in all competitions last season.
Cole is no longer featured on the AS Roma website as one of its players. Reports in mid-August said that Roma had terminated Cole’s deal, and we’ll have to see if that will be the resolution to the situation.
Cole played 107 for the English national team between 2001-2014. He won two Premier League titles and three FA Cup titles during his time at Arsenal, and another Premier League title and four more FA Cup titles during his time at Chelsea.
Cole played in 385 Premier League games for Arsenal and Chelsea, but was enjoying life in Italy as he spoke about his sense of freedom during Roma’s preseason tour in Australia.
“Of course, I wake up every morning new, free as a bird,” Cole said to the Herald Sun. “I know there’s not going to be a rubbish story in the paper about going to a nightclub or doing this or that.”
“I had a few offers in the Premier League, but I didn’t want to stay. I thought it was time to leave and enjoy a different culture.”
