Memphis Depay scored two goals and added an assist in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Club Brugge in the first leg of the Champions League qualification playoffs Tuesday.
Brugge took the lead in the 8th minute after an own goal by Michael Carrick. The 34-year-old midfielder deflected a freekick by Victor Vazquez into the back of the net.
Depay got his first goal of the night when he tied things up at 1-1 in the 13th minute. Depay received the ball out left and showed some great technical skills as he brought the ball into the penalty area and slotted it home with his right foot.
He then added a second in the 43rd minute when he received the ball out wide once more right outside the penalty area, broke into the middle and curled the ball into the far corner.
MUTV pundit Ron Atkinson said: “I remember seeing Cristiano Ronaldo here as a young player and I think Memphis has got something similar. His two goals came from cutting inside from the left and he’s got a great strike. He will be a real crowd-pleaser here at Old Trafford. I’m impressed by him.”
Depay then stood for the cross that Marouane Fellaini headed in behind Sebastien Bruzzese in the Brugge net to make it 3-1 in the 94th minute. The two goals were Depay’s first competition goals in a United shirt.
United will take the two-goal advantage with them to Brugge for the return leg next week. The winner will go through to the Champions League group stage.
