The Bundesliga is finally back in action. Borussia Dortmund had an abysmal campaign last year, but they made a statement in their season opener on Saturday, as they demolished Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0.
Everything went wrong for Dortmund last season. They were supposed to challenge Bayern Munich for the title, but instead found themselves in the nether regions of the Bundesliga table for a good part of the season. After 19 games, Dortmund were sitting in last place. They managed to go on a good run in the second half of the season, but even with nine wins in the last 15 league games, they only managed to finish in 7th place.
If the game against M’gladbach is any indication, then Dortmund fans can look forward to a much better campaign this season. Dortmund came out firing on all cylinders and played M’gladbach, who finished third last season, off the pitch.
Marco Reus opened up the scoring in the 15 minute after a blast from inside the penalty area. Yann Sommer in the M’gladbach net got a hand to it but was unable to keep it out. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-0 just six minute later. And in the 33rd minute Henrik Mkhitaryan made it 3-0. Mkhitaryan added a second early in the second half to make it 4-0. Dortmund were extremely effective in the final third as they saw four out of the six shots they had go into the back of the net.
Next up for Dortmund is a meeting with Odds BK in the Europa League Qualifiers on Thursday.
