Cesc Fabregas spoke out in the media defending teammates Diego Costa and Gerard Pique after the player have been criticized for the performances for Spain.
Spain overtook the lead in Group C after beating Slovakia 2-0 at home after goals by Jordi Alba and Andres Iniesta. Two players that has been under fire by the Spanish press is striker Diego Costa and defender Gerard Pique. Costa has only scored one goal in his last eight international appearances, but Fabregas is defending his Chelsea and Spain teammate saying he’s a great striker.
“We’re now the leaders [in Group C] and it’s likely we’ll qualify for the European Championship,” Fabregas said after the match. “We had a great first half and I think we gave a very complete performance. The squad is full of top players and hopefully we’ll continue to do well.
“[Costa] is a great striker. Last season, he scored more than 20 goals and [on Saturday] won a penalty to make it 2-0. He’s good at creating space.”
Spain now have 18 points after seven games, same as Slovakia, but leads the group on better goal difference. Fabregas also spoke about Pique and defended the Barcelona man saying that “Pique must carry on playing, being the best centre back he can be and giving everything for the team. Time heals everything.”
Spain has three games remaining in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. First, they take on FYR Macedonia on the road on Tuesday before closing it out with games against Luxembourg and Ukraine in October. The first and second placed teams in the group gets an automatic spot in the tournament. The best third-placed team also get a spot and the remaining eight third-placed teams go into a two-legged playoff for the remaining four spots.
