Tim Howard has gotten some criticism lately by Everton fans that wants to see him dropped, but Howard says his statistics backs up his starting position.
Many fans wants to see Joel Robles start instead of the 36-year-old U.S. international as they believe Howard has been prone to making mistakes this season.
“With all due respect, the criticism from fans and media doesn’t mean anything,” Howard told Goal.com.
“I think that, for players, it gets blown out of proportion. Strong-willed, good players don’t buy into that nonsense.
“When all is said and done, my numbers and record will speak for themselves, and I don’t mean that in a historic standpoint. I mean that now. Look at the Premier League, look at the stats for this season.
“It’s water off my back. It’s not something I concern myself with. I think what critics need to be more concerned with is the stats.
“I think you have to look at where I stack up with the other goalkeepers in the Premier League, and I’ll let that speak for the story. I’m not overly concerned with that.”
Statistically, Howard is one of Everton’s greatest goalkeepers, having posted 112 clean sheets for the Toffees during his career. Howard didn’t like that he’s getting written off at age 36.
“Does that mean I’m making mistakes I shouldn’t be making?” Howard said. “I think every goalkeeper makes mistakes. I’ve made mistakes over the last 10 years, but that wasn’t the story then.”
Howard is back with the USMNT after taking a hiatus for personal reasons. He’s now fighting with Brad Guzan for the starting job for the national team.
“There were reasons I had to do it,” Howard said.
“It was the only way I could possibly get some sort of reprieve, and in that regard it was good for me.
“It’s life. That’s how you balance career, life and family. It’s not easy. There are no right answers. I made the decision very much with my eyes wide open.
“I talked to a few people who were very close to me. The decision wasn’t made overnight. I was very well aware of what the ramifications could and might be and I was very comfortable with that.”
